As a result, Burkina Faso loses a significant portion of its added value. The government has responded by supporting the cashew processing industry by selling dried mangoes at premium prices. The new initiative will support the production and marketing of cashews in the country and in the region.

Burkina Faso Cashew Project

The Cashew Processing in Burkina Faso project will benefit nearly 2,800 women in the West African country. It will develop businesses for them around the cashew nut value chain. This project will organize the women into five cooperatives, providing training in entrepreneurship and business skills. The project will operate in the provinces of Houe, Comoe and Kenedougou.

 

The project is being implemented by Self Help Africa in partnership with the National Union of Cashew Producers. Since 2012, the organization has been working on the cashew value chain in Burkina Faso, Ghana and Benin. It also hopes to extend its work in these countries.  The project aims to make the cashew industry sustainable and profitable in the country.

The company processes about 1400 tons of unpeeled cashews each year and around 300 tons of ready-to-eat cashews. The processing takes place all year round.

Cashew Production in Burkina Faso

The Women of Africa in Cashew project has been supporting women farmers and entrepreneurs in West Africa since 2012. The project aims to improve economic empowerment for women through the professionalisation of cooperatives and micro and small agricultural produce processing enterprises. It also promotes the development of expertise and leadership among the farmers. To achieve the goals of the programme, more resources for the farmers and smallholders are needed, including credit facilities. Self Help is implementing the project in the three partner countries: Burkina Faso, Benin, and Ghana.

The African Cashew Initiative (ACi) is committed to empowering women through the development of the cashew industry. Through training and mentoring, the ACi aims to increase productivity of African cashew farmers while establishing stable business relations among the various stakeholders in the cashew industry. The project’s objectives include improving incomes of farmers, improving the quality of cashews, and enhancing the role of women in the production of the cashew.

The cashew industry has immense potential to improve livelihoods in developing countries, creating job opportunities, and fighting poverty. The African Cashew Initiative (ACi) has been encouraging the empowerment of women through its interventions. It aims to improve productivity of cashew farmers by building sustainable in-country processing and creating stable business relationships between all stakeholders in the cashew industry. The ACi intervention seeks to increase cashew yields and production in selected African countries.
