Cashew Nut Shell Liquid Extraction | CNSL | Cashew Nut Shell Oil
Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) is a versatile by-product retrieved from the Cashew Processing Plant. Cashew Shells are the outer shell of the Cashew Nuts which are part of the Cashewnut Fruit along with Cashew Apples. This shell contains viscous liquid, which is released on steaming of raw cashew nuts. This Cashew Nut Liquid is used to produce phenols after undergoing a De-carboxilation process.
CNSL resins have been used for many years in the manufcature of friction materials, contributing to the binding of the Constituents as well as friction enhancers in the form of dust obtained from the cured resin.
The shell of the nut is approximately 1/8th inch thick. Cashew nut shell liquid is the pericarp fluid of the cashew nut.
Natural CNSL is a mixture of phenolic compounds with aliphatic side chains and these are 70% anacardic acidm 5% cardonal and 18% cardol. CNSL is typically treated with high temperatures, which decarboxylates anacardic acid, yielding cardonal, additional distillation of CNSL rmeoves cardol leaving cardonal as the primary component in CNSL.

CASHEW SHELL LIQUID EXTRACTION PRESS
This is mechical extraction process done using an Expeller, where cashew shells are fed via elevator to the expeller, which are crushed under force to release the liquid inside with strong force and de-oiled cashew cakes removed from other end.
This shell liquid is highly toxic and contains lot of impurities and also sulphur. It needs to be settled using inhibitors so the impurities are collected the bottom and using this refining technique liquid can be made ready for next process.

CASHEW SHELL LIQUID EXTRACTION PRESS
Cashew Nut Shell Liquid – CNSL has a variety of industrial applications. It is used in coatings, additives, flame retardants, and pour point depressants. It has also been shown to inhibit the proliferation of HeLa cells and induced apoptosis. In addition, it has antibacterial, antifungal, and wound healing properties.
The Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL) is a phenolic liquid derived from the cashew nut. It contains mainly anacardic acid and cardol. The composition of CNSL differs according to the species of cashew. The differences may be due to climate, geography, or species.
Liquid from cashew nut shell in cashew nut industry has a range of applications and may be obtained from the pulverized shells. In some cases, the extraction of CNSL is carried out by solvent extraction. The quality of the extracted cashew nut shell oil varies according to the organic solvent. Nut shell oil may be purified using spontaneous emulsification. However, the extraction conditions should be mild to ensure that the natural composition of cashew nutshell liquid is preserved.
The cashew nut nut shell liquid (CNSL) is a non-edible, reddish brown phenolic liquid. It has a wide range of industrial and biomedical applications. It can be used as a renewable, economical, and environmentally friendly raw material. It can also be used to replace synthetic phenols. It is a non-toxic material that can be used in place of synthetic phenols. The presence of anacardic acid, an antibacterial agent, and methane-mitigating potency make it a promising raw material. It may also be used as an alternative to petroleum products.
CNSL EXTRACTION
Cashew Nut Shell Liquid – CNSL is a highly versatile by-product that is produced from Cashew Nuts. It is a reddish brown, viscous fluid that occurs in the soft honeycomb structure of the shell. It is used to produce phenols, which are used in a variety of chemical applications. It also provides an important source of long chain m-substituted phenolic compounds. It is widely used in polymer-based industries, as well as in surface active agents.
Natural cashew nut oil is a mixture of phenolic compounds with aliphatic side chains. The composition of natural Cashew Nut Shell Liquid – CNSL varies depending on the source and operating conditions. It is typically treated at high temperatures to decarboxylate anacardic acid. In addition, it contains approximately 18% cardol. CNSL is extracted from CNS using a cold, mechanical, or solvent extraction process.
In this study, we used a soxhlet extractor to isolate cardanol from CNSL. We evaluated the effects of process parameters, such as extraction cycle, solvent volume, pressure, and contact time on the extraction yield. The results showed that the effect of the extraction cycle on the yield was more significant than the effect of the solvent volume or pressure.
The process was carried out in an ASE extraction cell fitted with O-rings and end caps. A volume of 10 mL was extracted for each extraction cycle. The number of cycles per cell was set to achieve the desired Cashew Nut Shell Liquid – CNSL yield. The process was operated at 100 bars and used a water-methanol mixture as the solvent.
TREATMENT TO REDUCE DIHYDRIC PHENOLS
Various chemical reactions are performed using the cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). This phenolic liquid is extracted from the outer shell of cashew nuts and has been a useful agricultural by-product. It has many industrial applications such as rubber compounding, polymerization reactions and coatings.
The cashew nut shell liquid is an important precursor to many polymers. It is also a source of antioxidant cardanol. It has been used in a variety of plastic formulations and is a useful additive for adhesives. Its properties make it a suitable replacement for phenol in many industrial applications.
The present invention relates to the reduction of dihydric phenols in cashew nut shell liquid. This is achieved by treating the liquid with a suitable solvent and a pressure profile. This method is capable of yielding up to 10 times more Cashew Nut Shell Liquid – CNSL than conventional supercritical fluid extraction.
The pressure profile method is a highly effective method of separating the cashew nut shell liquid from its residue. This is achieved by heating the material to a temperature of 170°C to 175°C. This is followed by a reduced pressure of 30 to 40 mm mercury.
The Cashew Nut Shell Oil CNSL is then distilled to produce cardanol. This is a highly effective precursor to many polymers, and is a vital precursor for oligomers. It is used in a variety of industrial applications, such as adhesives, coatings, polymerization reactions, and rubber compounding.
The cashew nut shell is an inexpensive and renewable organic material resource. The extraction process is a practical means of reducing dihydric phenols in the cashew nut shell liquid.
